Flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency due to high tides expected in Kent and Sussex.

The agency said the high tides were expected to be higher than usual between 00:30 and 02:00 BST on Monday, with winds affecting this.

Coastal roads and footpaths were likely to be impacted the most, it said, adding that it could not rule out low-lying properties near to the seafront also being affected.

In Folkestone, Dover, Sandgate and Dungeness, flood gates were being closed and residents encouraged to start acting on flood plans.

People were advised to stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads, as waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

In West Sussex, a flood warning has been issued for Bosham and West Itchenor but the high tide on Monday afternoon was expected to be 40cm lower than overnight.

The warnings were expected to be withdrawn by Monday afternoon.

Across the country, 70 flood alerts have also been issued, including two in Sussex and eight in Kent, affecting Dartford, Whitstable, Margate, Ramsgate and parts of the River Medway.
