Man, 85, dies after being hit by articulated lorry

An 85-year-old pedestrian has died after he was struck by an articulated lorry in Ayrshire.

Police said the incident happened on the A76, near Castle, New Cumnock, at about 15:45 on Thursday.

The man, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the white DAF truck was not injured and the road reopened more than seven hours later.

Sgt Brian Simpson said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and they have asked for privacy at what is a very difficult time for them.

"Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch."
