Flood water warning after rescue operation

Drivers are being urged not to drive into floods by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service after a rescue operation.

Fire crews were called to Syston Road in Rothley, Leicestershire, on Saturday when a vehicle was trapped in standing water.

A technical rescue team set up a water sled to help one "elderly person" to dry land.

The road had been shut by Leicestershire County Council due to flooding - leading the brigade to issue a plea to drivers.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Road closure signs are in place at both ends of this road, however drivers are ignoring these signs.

"Please do not drive along flooded roads, especially if there are signs which state 'road closed'."

Leicestershire's Local Resilience Partnership said stranded vehicles could delay the reopening of roads, and a number are in situ across the county following recent flooding.

Other roads that the partnership said remained closed to traffic on Saturday include Braunstone Lane East in Aylestone, Rearsby Road between Thrussington and Rearsby, Crow Mills in Countesthorpe, Newton Lane in Wistow, Slash Lane and Mountsorrel Lane in Sileby, Sileby Road in Mountsorrel and the A6 Sileby slip roads, Granite Way between Quorn and the A6, and Churchill Road, Thurmaston.
