Speed limit cut to 40mph at scene of bus crash

The speed limit on a busy road in Lincolnshire has been reduced to 40mph (about 65km/h) for safety reasons.

The new limit will apply along Meadow Lane, which runs between North Hykeham and the Brant Road area of Lincoln.

Lincolnshire County Council’s planning and regulation committee approved the reduction from 60mph (about 95km/h) on Monday.

Ward councillor Tom Dyer said: "This is something residents in North Hykeham are keen to see implemented.

"It's a key route, but it's narrow and not lit. It's absolutely essential to make the road as safe as possible,"

It comes after more than 700 people signed a petition in support of the measure following a crash in 2021 in which a school bus ended up in a ditch, with a 12-year-old boy breaking his arm.

Sally, who organised the petition, welcomed the move.

She said as it stood drivers were going too fast along the road.

“We also worry about children walking and biking to school," she told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Plans to reduce the speed limit at Whisby Crossroads, near Lincoln, from 50mph (about 80km/h) to 40mph have also been approved.

The committee was told there had been four serious accidents in the past five years, and a car flipped onto its roof in a 2018 crash.

Council member Marianne Overton said: "I'm very happy to support this. I know this junction and it always feels dicey – 40mph is definitely the right solution."
