A man has been taken to hospital after being "shot to the chest by an air rifle" in Plymouth, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the incident happened on North Hill at about 05:45 GMT on Tuesday.

A force spokesperson said armed response units had been sent to the scene, which was closed off to the public.

The victim has been taken to hospital but his injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing, the spokesperson added.

Devon and Cornwall Police said inquiries were ongoing to locate the suspect.

Those who witnessed the incident or may have relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage have been asked to contact police.
