Town's market to move for shopping centre revamp
A market is set to close in its current location ahead of a £50m revamp to improve a shopping centre.
Grimsby Top Town Market, which has been on Bull Ring Lane since 1976, will close in early February, with plans to temporarily relocate it within Freshney Place.
Following the development, the market hall will move to the site of the former BHS building, along with a five-screen cinema and other leisure facilities nearby as part of the Freshney Place leisure scheme.
North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) leader Philip Jackson described the development as "one of the largest schemes we've ever done".
A new public space outside the shopping centre, a food hall and a Starbucks have also been confirmed as being part of the new scheme.
An NELC spokesperson said the council was working with market traders to find a temporary relocation for the market in Freshney Place, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The temporary relocation will be in place during the transformation of the western end of Victoria Street and the town centre.
Spring 2027 is the latest completion date for the market to be completed before tenants move in.
Jackson said: "In the Freshney Place leisure and market scheme, we're investing in one of the largest schemes we've ever done.
"We believe this is right for the town.
"We know there will be short-term disruption, but the result will transform the town centre and deliver new shopping and leisure options for our residents."
