A 26-year-old man has been released on conditional bail following a fatal crash on the Strand in central London, the Met Police has said.

One woman in her 20s died and three others were hurt after a van hit pedestrians at about 11:40 GMT on Tuesday, close to King's College London and Somerset House.

A 27-year-old woman remains in hospital in a serious but not life-threatening condition, while a 23-year-old man also taken to hospital has since been discharged.

The force said its investigation continued and reiterated that the crash was not believed to be terror-related.

Police praised members of the public who tried to help following the crash

Det Ch Supt Christina Jessah from the Met said she commended members of the public "who tried to save this young woman's life and help the others who were injured".

She added: "We are aware of inaccurate speculation online about this incident being terrorism related.

"We ask the public to refrain from this speculation to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and avoid causing further suffering to the family of the young woman."

Cordons have been lifted but police continue to work with King's College London and others in the area, she added.

A King's College London spokesperson previously said they were aware of the incident and were liaising with emergency services.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service (LAS) had said paramedics had treated four people at the scene, but "despite our best efforts one person was pronounced dead".
