More new homes for former mining village

Building work is underway for 43 new homes at a former Staffordshire mining village.

The scheme, known as Silkworks, will comprise one-bedroom apartments as well two- and three-bedroom affordable rental homes in Chesterton, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The project, being overseen by social landlord Aspire Housing, has been part-funded by Homes England and the government's Town Deal.

It is expected to be completed in early 2026, while planning permission has also been granted for a third phase of the development.

Nine bungalows were built in 2022, forming the first phase of the £20m scheme.

Dan Gray, executive director of place at Aspire Housing, said he was "looking forward to seeing the Chesterton community continue to grow and thrive."

Keon Homes has been appointed to construct the homes, with work already taking place to clear the site.

The firm's partnership director Matt Beckley said affordable housing was "badly needed" in the area.

Aspire Housing owns and manages more than 9,000 homes across Staffordshire and Cheshire.

Its reinvests profits into new homes and support services.
