Charity offers romance scam support service
A charity has launched a romance scam support service for victims in Kent and Sussex.
The specialist service offered by Victim Support includes a team of dedicated fraud caseworkers that provide free, confidential and personalised support.
Relationship fraud happens when someone is deceived into thinking they are in a genuine friendship or romantic relationship with someone who is actually a criminal, according to the charity.
Lauren Brain, relationship fraud service manager, said the crime was "remarkably common".
These types of fraud cases often take place online, with the scammer coercing the victim into sending money, the charity says.
Ms Brain added: "Many victims are too embarrassed to open up to their friends or family about what has happened, leaving them isolated and vulnerable.
"That's why this service is so important."
The service, which also covers London, is delivered in person and online, and includes one-to-one support sessions, peer support and group work.
'It's broken our family'
The charity said one victim from Sussex lost £140,000 through a romance scam.
"I feel ashamed, embarrassed and physically ill after what I've done," the victim said.
"I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this. It's broken our family, and the effects are clearly devastating."
Anyone needing help is urged to contact Victim Support.
