Weight and speed restrictions have been introduced on a mountain pass in the Lake District where damage to a culvert was discovered.

Cumberland Council has imposed an immediate 10mph speed limit on Honister Pass after the damage was found during a routine inspection.

The authority apologised for the inconvenience but said it had no choice but to impose restrictions until a "permanent solution" could be found.

A vehicle weight restriction of 20 tonnes has also been imposed.

The council said large vehicles and HGVs should avoid the pass near the slate mine visitors' centre and instead access the area via Buttermere.

"We apologise for any inconvenience these measures may cause and appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding," a spokesman added.

"Further works will be required to implement a permanent solution."
