Further arrests after police chase ends in crash

Two more people have been arrested after a car being chased by police crashed.

Cleveland Police attempted to stop a red Hyundai, believed to have been stolen overnight, shortly after 11:00 BST on Wednesday.

The car made off and a pursuit took place, which led to a crash on the A1027 westbound carriageway, off the A19 near Billingham, Teesside.

A 20-year-old woman from Hartlepool, who was travelling in the Hyundai and taken to hospital with serious injuries, has since been arrested on suspicion of burglary, while a 24-year-old man from Thornaby, who was also travelling in the car, has been arrested for the same offence, police have confirmed.

Four people were in the Hyundai when it crashed with a white Kia.

A 20-year-old man from Billingham, who was previously arrested on suspicion of drug driving and theft of a vehicle, has now been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, failing to stop for police and assaulting an emergency worker.

All three are in custody but police are still looking for a third man who fled the scene.

The Hyundai travelled along the A1027 eastbound carriageway from Junction Road in Norton during the chase.

It drove over the A19 roundabout and continued onto the other side of the A1027 near to Woodland Park before it crashed.

A man in the Kia was taken to North Tees General Hospital.

Police have urged anyone with any information to get in touch.

In line with mandatory procedures, Cleveland Police said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
