Road closed as firefighters tackle kebab shop fire

Fire engulfs kebab shop in Devizes

A road is closed in both directions following a fire at a mid-terraced property.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) was called to the fire at a building on Northgate Street in Devizes at about 03:11 GMT on Tuesday.

The service said the fire had spread throughout the whole property, including a takeaway kebab restaurant, and into the roof space of the neighbouring buildings.

No injuries have been reported and seven fire appliances remain at the scene.

Northgate Street is closed between New Park Street and Market Place.

Matt Skyme, Dorset and Wilts Fire Service Station Manager, said tackling the fire was a "difficult job" due to lots of hotspots.

"We've had six fire engines and up to 30 firefighters fighting a blaze in a kebab house which is located in the middle which has spread to adjacent properties," he said.

Mr Skyme confirmed that no one was inside the properties when the fire broke out.

DWFRS said it was investigating where and how the fire started.
