Dorset councillors voted to knock the building down and create a temporary car park in April

A council wants a contractor to knock down a former bowling alley in a seaside town as it looks to revamp the area.

Dorset Council is willing to pay a firm up to £250,000 to demolish the MFA Bowl in St Nicholas Street, Weymouth, which has been vacant since April 2019.

Its councillors agreed to get rid of the 18-lane facility in April.

The authority will level the site and use it as a temporary 149-space car park while development plans are finalised.

It did not reveal proposals for the land when it took its decision in April but previous plans involved building homes.

The authority wants companies to apply for the demolition work by 13 January 2025.

A contract would start on 10 February and end by 21 March.

The council previously said the total cost of knocking down the site and building the car park is likely to be about £400,000.
