Firefighters received "countless" calls about a blaze at a beauty spot, which they "left to burn".

Cleveland Fire Brigade said it was called on Wednesday at about 19:30 BST to reports of a fire on Eston Hills, in Teesside.

A spokesman said: "Crews checked the area and due to the location and time of the fire it was left to burn."

This was because the blaze did not present a danger to life and was not close to roads or buildings, they added.

The area has a history of deliberate fires.

In 2015, the hills were set alight twice in two days, while in 2022, an area of about 3,000 sq miles (7,770 sq km) of scrubland went up in flames.
