A fire which led to the evacuation of some residents from nearby flats was caused by a cigarette or discarded barbeque, investigators believe.

The fire at West Hill in St Helier on Sunday was in an electrical station and bin store.

It threatened a four-storey block of flats close by and 18 firefighters were called to put it out.

Station Commander Ryan Hall, of the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, warned about the "consequences of carelessly discarding hot materials in bins" and said all burning materials "must be fully extinguished and cool before their disposal".
