Town centre improvements on track - council

Work to improve a town centre in Herefordshire is on track to be completed by the end of November, the council has said.

Roads and pavements are being updated as part of a £3m scheme in Leominster town centre.

Shop owners on the High Street previously said the ongoing roadworks had been "catastrophic" for small businesses, with one owner telling the BBC they had seen trade drop by 30%.

Herefordshire Council said the investment would contribute to "restoring the distinctive character" of the town and would help to boost trade in the long-term.

Work on the High Street and Victoria Street was "almost finished," a council spokesperson added.

Teams will then focus on Iron Cross and the junction of High Street and Corn Street, with parts of the area set to be closed until 4 November.

The council said resurfacing work and paving improvements on Corn Square are due to be completed by the end of November.

Councillor Philip Price added "good progress" was being made following a "slower start than we would have liked".

"The contractor is on track to complete the works by the end of November, subject to any further unexpected issues," he said.

"The enhancements will help breathe new life into the historic High Street and Corn Square in time for Christmas shopping in December."

A drop-in session where residents can view regeneration plans is being held at Grange Court on 22 October.
