Landmark bridge wins heritage prize
A historical railway bridge has won a heritage award for its homage to a former Black Country landmark.
The Hanson’s Mild Ale bridge, which crosses Birmingham New Road in Tipton, was replaced earlier this year in its original iconic green and gold colours.
It was the final structure installed for the first phase of the West Midlands Metro network extension from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill.
The bridge, which nods to the former Hanson's Ale branding, won the Heritage prize at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) West Midlands awards on Thursday.
Midland Metro Alliance (MMA) and engineering firm Tony Gee and Partners were behind the collaborative design.
The judges said they were impressed by the bridge's homage to the previous structure, a "local landmark."
David Lea, associate director at Tony Gee, said: "We are thrilled to have contributed to the preservation of this cherished local landmark, ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come.”
MMA project director Tom Maplethorpe added: “It is truly gratifying to see the Hanson’s Ale bridge acknowledged by such a respected local institution with this award.
"Not without its challenges, from concept design through to delivery, the teams’ efforts have prioritised the preservation of this local icon - a shining example of the MMA's dedication to leaving a positive legacy."
