A woman has died after a road crash in North Lanarkshire.

The 41-year-old pedestrian was hit by a silver Ford Fiesta in the Crossgates area of Bellshill at about 21:30 on Friday.

Emergency services attended and she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A 36-year-old man who was driving the car was arrested in connection with road traffic offences and was later released pending further inquiries.

The road was closed and later reopened at about 04:00 on Saturday.

Sgt Andrew Coutts said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

He asked anyone who could help with the investigation to get in touch.
