An 18-year-old man has died after the car he was a passenger in crashed into another vehicle during a police chase.

The Toyota crashed on Manchester Road in Rochdale after a "short pursuit" by police officers who were responding to reports of a stolen car at about 21:15 BST on Tuesday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

A man in his 20s and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and stealing a car.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct after the crash.

Officers were called to the William Greenwood Close area of Heywood, when the Toyota failed to stop.

The 18-year-old was pronounced dead by emergency services after the vehicle sped away and crashed into a Volkswagen, the force said.

A spokesman for GMP said the Volkswagen driver was unhurt.

The force has urged anyone with information about the crash, including dashcam footage, to come forward.
