Former care home site sold to Aldi in £1.5m deal

City of Wolverhampton Council is to sell the site of a former care home to supermarket giant Aldi in a £1.5m deal.
The council agreed to knock down the former Nelson Mandela House in Pendeford in 2016 as part of cost-cutting measures when it was among the few remaining care homes to be run by the local authority.
In 2023, the council said the site had been declared a higher flood risk by the Environment Agency which made it unsuitable for housing.
The land neighbours an existing Morrisons supermarket and the Pendeford Health Centre.
The care home was demolished along with three others as part of a move to save £2.6m, despite criticism by the Unison trade union.
A report in 2023 recommended the land be sold, stating the sale provided "purchasers with the opportunity to bring this brownfield site back into use in a way that will benefit the local economy".
