A split in the tree has prompted the closure of nearby Skeldergate Bridge

A bridge over the River Ouse in York had to be closed after a nearby tree split in half.

The A1036 across Skeldergate Bridge was shut both ways between Tower Street and Clementhorpe, but later reopened.

The damaged tree is on Terry Avenue, between the Bonding Warehouse building and the bridge. Tree surgeons are on site.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area and bus companies have also warned of delays to some services in the city centre.

A spokesperson for York Council said the route from Terry Avenue to Skeldergate Bridge was closed while teams dealt with the "unsafe tree".

However, they said Skeldergate remained open but with no left turn on to the bridge.

"The tree has been assessed and teams are on site to work on a solution as soon as possible," they added.

The spokesperson urged people to avoid the area and said the road was expected to reopen later.
