Stopover sites set up ahead of horse fair

Stopover areas have been set up for people travelling to a gathering of Gypsies and travellers.

Appleby Horse Fair takes place in Cumbria from 6 June and "temporary stop over areas" (TSOA) have been set up for those travelling to and from the event.

The traditional week-long gathering attracts thousands of people, with many making the journey by horse or caravan over several days.

Eight TSOAs will operate along traditional travelling routes to Appleby in Teesdale and south-west Durham areas and remain in operation until 27 June.

The TSOAs will be located at Westerton Layby; Gurney Valley; Broomielaw Picnic Area; Guide Post Corner, Bowes; land at Stainton Bank; Shaw Bank Field; Wackerfield Layby and Winston Corner.

Durham County Council said council officers will be making regular visits to the TSOAs, as well as unauthorised encampments, to ensure "appropriate support" is in place for people.

Joanne Waller, head of the councils' community protection services, said: "Appleby Horse Fair has a long history and, for hundreds of years, Gypsies and travellers attending the event have passed through County Durham.

"We are committed to working with our partners to provide TSOAs that benefit those using them and the residents living along the routes."
