A trial of 20mph (32.2 km/h) zones is to be introduced to an East Yorkshire town.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the reduction of speed limits in some roads in Hedon was "following an increasing number of requests for 20mph speed limits in residential areas".

Councillor Steve Gallant said it was about "making the town safer".

"It's about getting people just to accept responsibility and drive sensibly around the town," he added.

Markings have been painted on the affected roads ahead of the six-month trial which starts in March.

A council spokesperson said the authority wanted feedback from residents.

"We will also be collecting data on vehicle speeds, traffic volumes and accident rates," the spokesperson said.

"The feedback and evidence will help determine the effectiveness."
