Warning to stay away from concrete slab over cliff

Concerns have been raised about a large slab of concrete wall which is overhanging a cliff above a beach in East Sussex.

Local resident Richard Weston said the large number of people coming and going at the base of the cliff at Newhaven West beach was "worrying".

He said the concrete was "teetering" at the top of the cliff and looked "highly unstable as there was much erosion beneath it".

Lewes District Council said the public "must adhere to warning signs and stay away from the area at the top and bottom of the cliff face".

The authority said the concrete slab has been in situ for many years.

In a statement, the council said it had become more visible and exposed as the cliff steadily eroded.

"Due to its size and location, we are liaising with engineering specialists with experience of working on cliff faces along the south coast and the Maritime Coastguard Agency," it added.
