A new forum, aimed at encouraging young people to help shape the future of a district in Kent, is due to be launched.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council said the group would meet in person twice a year to share their priorities for the area.

The council said it hoped the forum would enhance democracy and promote the importance of local government.

Mike Blakemore, the council's cabinet member for community and collaboration, said: "This new initiative will help young people actively inform specific council services and share their views on issues that are important to them."

The plan had been in the pipeline since first being proposed in 2023.

A council spokesperson said: "Young people surveyed as part of the corporate plan consultation last year gave resoundingly positive feedback, with the majority expressing an interest in participating once the forum was established."

Members of the forum would be encouraged to apply for future work experience opportunities at the council.

Local schools, colleges and youth groups were also being contacted about how people could get involved.

Mr Blakemore added: "Their voices will influence the future of our work and wonderful district."
