Driver who killed man on mobility scooter jailed
A driver who fatally injured a man after she knocked him off his mobility scooter has been jailed for eight months.
Stephen Young, 68, had been crossing the road in Northallerton when he was hit by a Citroen C2 being driven by Anne Marie Stevens, 34, in March 2023.
She was sentenced to eight months in prison and banned from driving for 15 months at York Crown Court on Tuesday.
In a statement released on behalf of Mr Young's family, his daughter said her father's death "destroyed our lives" and "changed us forever".
The statement added: "Dad wasn't only just a husband a father a grandfather, brother, friend and uncle, he was a pillar of support - the foundation for our family and without him it has collapsed.
"We are destroyed.”
North Yorkshire Police said Mr Young had been halfway across the road on Greenhowsyke Lane after crossing a mini roundabout when he was hit by Stevens' car.
He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital. His condition deteriorated, however, and he later died.
'Entirely preventable'
The force said a specialist forensic collision investigator concluded Mr Young had negotiated the roundabout correctly and he was likely in the process of clearing the carriageway when he was struck.
Stevens pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving. She is a mother of six children.
PC Amy Herrick from North Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Investigation Unit said her actions "have directly changed the lives of numerous people forever, and ultimately caused the death of Mr Young, which was entirely preventable".
"Every driver holds a significant amount of responsibility when they take a motor vehicle onto our roads, and I would urge people not to become complacent, ensuring they always drive safely and to the rules of the road.”
