Detailed plans have been published showing what the next phase of a major research campus expansion could look like, with the creation of two new research buildings.

Plans have been in the works for several years to expand the Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge.

Outline permission was granted in 2020 for the overall project, which would see 1,500 new homes, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, alongside the science facilities.

Developers Urban and Civic Hinxton Ltd said it was "committed to shaping a unique destination with the homes and amenities to support a diverse life science community".

The latest application, which was submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council, would see two new Research and Translation infrastructure buildings built on land next to the A1303.

The plans set out the designs for what the research buildings could look like, including one which would host a pub or restaurant and be open to all.

The developer said: "A substantial investment by Wellcome, it will bring two new exemplary life science buildings to the market... which can be configured to suit a number of different sizes of tenants, from start-ups to established mature businesses, and a variety of different types of science."

Developers said the buildings would reflect the "vision and ambition" for the wider development.
