Man dead after assault at flat in Dungannon

A man has died after a serious assault in Dungannon, County Tyrone, police have said.

The victim was found with serious injuries in a flat in the Corrainey Park area of the town at about 20:00 GMT on Thursday.

Emergency services had been called to the Lisnahull Estate and a large area was cordoned off.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a call at 20:13 GMT and despatched one rapid response paramedic, two emergency crews and an advanced paramedic.

In a statement shortly after midnight, police confirmed the death.

Corrainey Park is closed and police remain at the scene on Friday morning.

A huge police cordon surrounds the estate of Lisnahull just off the busy Newell Road on the outskirts of Dungannon town centre.

There were several police cars, two ambulances and a couple of rapid response vehicles surrounding flats at the edge of the estate at about 21:30.

Residents from the surrounding houses stood outside their front doors as flashing police lights bounced off the front windows of their homes. They have been trying to find out more about what has happened.

A local woman approached a police officer at the cordon trying to get into the estate to visit a family member.

But, for now, only police and emergency services are allowed in and out.
