A woman in her 60s has been left in a critical condition in hospital after a crash involving a police car.

The crash took place at about 07:50 GMT between the police vehicle and a white Suzuki Celerio on Cleator Moor Road in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Police said a male officer in his 20s, who was driving, had also been injured.

The force said the officer had been responding to an emergency at the time of the crash, which had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Cleator Moor Road has been closed and drivers were advised to avoid the area as the road may remain shut for some time.

Officers from Cumbria Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with footage relating to the crash to come forward.
