The supermarket chain Aldi has launched another attempt to open an outlet in a Surrey town, after planners rejected its first application.

Aldi has launched a public consultation into the new plan for the site in Portsmouth Road, Thames Ditton, which was once the Guy Salmon Jaguar Landrover showroom.

The previous application was thrown out by Elmbridge Borough Council in 2022, which also rejected on appeal.

Objectors had compared the store's proposed design to "an alien spaceship".

The original design had attracted criticism from some local groups and residents

The application was initially rejected because of its impact on nearby homes, a listed pub and a conservation area.

Aldi says it is putting forward "a revised planning application" which it has drawn up "following feedback from local people".

In a statement it said: "The proposed store will be significantly lower in height than the previous scheme, with a more traditional facade and more trees and hedging to improve screening and reduce the impact on neighbours."

The new plans will go on public display at Dittons Library from 15:00 to 19:00 GMT on 9 December.

The company is asking for the public's feedback via its website.
