A man has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after a car was driven through barriers at an Army barracks, police have said.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to reports that a man had attempted to enter St Omer Barracks in Aldershot on Saturday at about 16:30 GMT.

It was reported he then got out the car, shouted at guards and damaged the car with a knife.

A 54 year-old, of no fixed address, was charged with a number of offences and was due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Monday but the force said he had since been sectioned so the case would be discussed at court.

The force said it was not currently treating the incident as terrorism related.

An explosive ordnance disposal team also attended the scene on Saturday due to comments the man made but confirmed there was no explosive threat, police said.
