Four puppies have been rescued by police after being stolen on Sunday night.

The seven-week-old cocker spaniels were taken during a burglary in Kelloe leaving their mother Freckles heartbroken, Durham Police said.

Officers have now found four of the puppies who are being looked after at Bishop Auckland police station. One remains missing.

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the burglary and remain in custody.

The puppies had only recently been weaned from their mother, who was in the property at the time of the burglary, the force said.

"We have some furry good news," a Durham Police spokesperson said.

"We are delighted to share that four of the puppies have been found and are now resting up at Bishop Auckland police station.

"We are still looking for one more puppy which we believe may have been sold."

Anyone with information about the stolen puppy is asked to contact the police.
