Temperatures reached a record low on Thursday with -18.7 degrees Celsius recorded at Castlederg, County Tyrone.
This beats the previous record of -18 Celsius on Monday in the same area.
Meanwhile, the travel chaos of recent days appears to be easing although driving conditions remain treacherous.
Northern Ireland's three airports are open but delays are expected. Flights have resumed at Dublin airport after they were suspended becaused of heavy snowfalls.
However, with temperatures remaining well below freezing, police have asked motorists to be extremely careful.
They have warned that freezing fog and black ice have created treacherous driving conditions on many roads on Thursday.
The latest warning follows predictions that the bill for maintaining NI roads this winter is expected to be more than £10m.
The Department for Regional Development said that the average cost of a normal winter service was around £5m.
Last year's extreme weather pushed the total up to more than double that amount.
A DRD spokesperson said early indications suggested it would be "significantly more" this year.
