A railway station which was shut due to flooding brought by heavy rainfall amid Storm Bert has reopened.

Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed Newbury Station was now fully open after work to clear platform 1 was completed.

Commuters were warned earlier in the week of lengthy delays after tracks and a platform were submerged at the station in Berkshire.

A Thames Water spokesperson said "excess sewage water" at the station occurred despite its "proactive measures".

“This follows Storm Bert and heavy rainfall earlier this week, which led to sewer flooding at the station," the spokesperson continued.

"Unfortunately this occurred despite having put proactive measures in place, including having three tankers on the ground to pump away excess water since 23 November.”
