A 50-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital after a stabbing in Sutherland.

Police said a 24-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident in the village of Bonar Bridge on Thursday night.

The force said emergency services were called to a report of a disturbance on Carnmhor Road at about 21:15.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it sent two ambulances, an air ambulance and a specialist trauma team. The woman was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Police said the man was due to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court on Monday.

Det Insp Calum Reid said: "We understand that an incident like this can cause concern in a small local community.

"However, this is being treated as an isolated incident with no threat to the wider public.

"Officers remain in the area as part of our inquiries and anyone with concerns can approach them."
