Domestic abuse survivors share stories for campaign
Survivors of domestic abuse have shared their experiences and how they have found their voice again as part of a campaign.
Peterborough City Council launched a short film showcasing 10 survivors and the steps they took to rebuild their lives.
The project was part of White Ribbon Day - an international campaign that raises awareness on the issue of violence against women and girls.
One of the anonymous survivors said their experience of domestic abuse started with "just a shove" before it turned into punches.
"I was always covering up bruises, making excuses to my friends and family - I lived in fear, constantly walking on eggshells," they said.
"I couldn't recognise the person I had become. I was trapped, scared, and alone.
"Leaving was the hardest thing I've ever done, but now I feel free. I'm rebuilding my life, one step at a time, and I’m stronger than ever."
'Trapped'
The video shares different elements of domestic abuse - from physical abuse to financial and emotional abuse.
One of the other survivors included in the video said they were isolated from friends and family while what they wore and ate was controlled by their abuser.
"I felt trapped, like I was losing myself bit by bit. I was just an extension of him, not a person," they said.
The campaign started on 25 November and lasts until 10 December on Human Rights Day.
Councillor Shabina Qayyum, cabinet member for adults and health at the council, said supporting White Ribbon Day was more than a symbolic gesture and was a "call to action for our entire community".
"By raising awareness and promoting respectful relationships, we can create a safer, more inclusive Peterborough for everyone," she said.
"I urge residents to join us in making this commitment and to speak out against violence in all its forms."
The council's campaign is in partnership with local charities including Impakt, Peterborough Women's Aid, Peterborough Rape Crisis and Living Keys.
