Investigation after listed pub converted into shop
A council investigation has been launched after a Grade II listed pub in Coventry was converted into a supermarket without planning permission.
New signs have been put on the side of The Oak Inn in Gosford Street, which closed as a pub after surrendering its licence two months ago.
Coventry City Council said it had not received any applications from the pub that would allow it to open for a different use.
"Officers have visited the site, and the matter is currently under investigation," a spokesperson said.
The change comes months after a review into the former pub's licence was launched, after repeated reports of noise nuisances.
Due to the building's listed status, any alteration to the pub internally or externally, or in terms of use, must get permission from the council.
It can be a criminal offence to carry out work to a listed building without permission and the council can prosecute if work is done illegally.
A council spokesperson said: “To date no applications have been received for the works recently undertaken at the property.
"Officers have visited the site, and the matter is currently under investigation’.”
The Oak Inn has been contacted for comment.
