A lorry carrying a 46-tonne industrial machine has hit and damaged the wall of a terraced house in an East Yorkshire village.

The incident on Main Street in Preston involved a trailer carrying a jaw crusher, which is normally used in demolition work or quarrying.

Nobody was hurt in the crash which happened at about 09:50 GMT on Wednesday, Humberside Police said.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area if possible.

Hull City Council confirmed the incident was a result of an HGV "contravening the weight limit" and said it was a police matter that will be fully investigated.

A spokesperson said: "The council has worked closely with Preston Parish Council and the Preston Traffic Group to discuss their concerns around traffic levels, and have put in place a number of measures to help manage traffic flow through the village."

The council added that a bypass option had been explored but would require external grant funding and the proposal does not meet the criteria for government funding at this time.

Preston parish councillor Michelle Wing said there was "always something happening with the HGV's coming through Preston".

"It's too little, it's too small," she said. "The roads aren’t built for articulated lorries.

"You know it could have been schoolchildren passing, bricks falling. There could have been a death here."
