Christmas toy run in memory of 'special' teenager

The family and friends of a much-loved teenager who lost his life in a road accident are organising a Christmas toy run in his memory.

Alfie Gray, 18, was killed on the A370 near Hewish, Weston-super-Mare, in September, while riding his motorbike home from work.

The Bikers for Alfie group, set up by his friends, is helping his family to collect donated gifts for the charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Alfie's mum Jenny said: "Alfie would have loved seeing the smiles on all the children's faces when they receive their gifts on Christmas morning.”

A crowdfunder has been set up to help buy the Christmas toys and is aiming to raise £1,000.

“It’s going to be a very difficult first Christmas without Alfie,” Jenny added.

“But seeing everyone getting behind this toy run in his memory is heartwarming."

It is hoped the toys will be delivered to CHSW’s Charlton Farm Hospice in North Somerset before Christmas.

Charlton Farm is one of three hospices in the South West run by the charity which describes itself as being "dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives".

The Bikers for Alfie group has also been planning motorbike gatherings, plaques and tributes at venues where they and Alfie used to meet.

Jenny and Kevin, Alfie's dad, said: "It was important that we did something in his memory and leave a lasting legacy to such a special young man."

CHSW area fundraiser Lucie Perryman said: "We're so incredibly grateful to Jen and Kev for thinking of Children's Hospice South West, in memory of Alfie, at this time of year, making it even more special for our children and families.

"Alfie was very clearly a well-loved, generous young man, and this will help to keep his memory alive in such a fabulous way."
