A man has died after a tree fell on a car on a dual carriageway.

It happened amid yellow wind and rain warnings in place in the south of England because of Storm Bert.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called on Saturday morning to a report that a tree had fallen on the A34 southbound carriageway, between Kings Worthy and Winnall.

The driver of a black Mercedes E350, a man in his 60s, died at the scene. A silver Skoda Kodiaq was also damaged but no other injuries have been reported.

When asked if the falling tree was storm-related, a police spokesperson said: "We have nothing further to add at this time as it is currently under investigation."

The force said the man's family has been informed and appealed for dashcam footage of the incident.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area because of significant delays.

The southbound carriageway was shut for about six hours as National Highways removed the tree and recovered the vehicles.

One lane reopened after 14:00 GMT. The northbound carriageway was not affected.
