A Lincolnshire woman is about to turn 106 - and her care home is asking the public to send in a birthday card for each year of her life.

Edith Hill, described as "one in a million", puts her long life down to "eating lots of chocolate".

Staff at Aspen Lodge Care Home in Skegness, where she has resided for the past six years, are planning a celebration on 3 March.

Head housekeeper Anita Tindle said the centenarian had already received 40 cards but appealed for more, adding: "It makes my heart melt that people have taken part."

Ms Tindle said staff had been heartened by daily deliveries of cards.

She said: "It goes to show that there is some community spirit out there and people are willing to help."

Ms Hill, who has one son, will have a spring-themed party, with two singers booked to perform.

"She is a really lovely lady with a great character and still does everything for herself," said Ms Tindle.

"She is one-in-a-million really."

Ms Tindle said her resident can "chat for England", adding she is "amazing for her age."

Ms Hill's niece, Anne Turner, who is 86, said her aunt - a secretary in her younger years - was "very work-orientated".

"She likes keeping up with all of the family news and has always been very independent, kind and loving," she added.
