Officers were called to Raza Jamia Masjid mosque on Friday afternoon

A man was stabbed outside a mosque and left seriously injured, police have said.

Officers were called to Raza Jamia Masjid mosque on Lower Antley Street in Accrington, Lancashire, at about 14:37 BST.

They found the man, aged in his 40s, with stab injuries to his back and he was taken to hospital, where his condition was described as stable.

Lancashire Police said it was believed to have been "an isolated incident between parties known to each other" and asked people "not to engage in any unhelpful speculation".

"There is no perceived wider threat to the public," the force added.

Anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage has been urged to come forward.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the mosque said it was working to support police and had temporarily closed while the investigation continued.
