Council announces new community housing scheme

A new housing initiative has been announced by a council to provide short-term support for people facing housing uncertainty.

The Welcoming Homes scheme is being piloted by West Northamptonshire Council and aims to get hosts to provide a spare room and shared living space to those who are looking to transition back to independent living.

Hosts will receive a monthly "thank-you payment" to cover expenses, along with dedicated support from a caseworker who assists with the arrangement and ongoing needs.

Councillor David Smith from the council said the plan is "a powerful example of community spirit".

The local authority said the programme was inspired by the success of the Homes for Ukraine model, in which UK homes hosted Ukrainian nationals and members of their families.

The scheme will offer "tailored services" for guests, including mental health support, financial guidance, and skills training.

Participants, including both hosts and guests, will undergo safeguarding checks to ensure a safe experience.

Mr Smith continued: "By connecting people with willing hosts, we’re addressing housing challenges while building meaningful relationships across our community.”
