Man found guilty of raping woman in street

A man has been found guilty of assaulting a woman and then raping her in the street.

Jonathon Newby, 34, of Gypsey Road, Bridlington, followed the victim as she walked home from a night out on 19 March.

He then attacked her from behind with a bladed weapon and raped her in a wooded area on Bessingby Industrial Estate before he fled the scene.

Newby had denied three counts of rape, using an offensive weapon to threaten, carrying a weapon with the intention of committing a sexual offence and unlawful wounding, but was found guilty of all charges at Grimsby Crown Court earlier after a nine-day trail.

Following the incident, the victim spoke to two officers on high visibility patrol in the Ramsey Road area.

Newby was then located walking in the direction of Bessingby Road and arrested. He was charged with the offences three days later.

Det Con Ethan Anderson said: "I cannot begin to put into words the bravery and courage the woman has shown throughout the investigation and court proceedings, and I want to offer my sincerest thanks and praise as she has helped take an evil man off our streets.

"Newby is a sexual predator who subjected a woman to a horrific and utterly traumatising ordeal for his own perverse needs.

"By refusing to admit his despicable crimes he has then put her through further torment, having to relive the ordeal in a trial. I hope the result brings her some sense of justice."

Newby has been remanded for sentencing at Grimsby Crown Court on 3 February.
