With much attention on the economy and the cost of living, the way the BBC reports statistics is under particular scrutiny at the moment; the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines say that “When our output includes statistics, we should explain the numbers clearly, put them into context, weigh, interpret and, where appropriate, challenge them, present them clearly and attribute them.....Where claims are wrong or misleading, they should be challenged”
The full guidelines on Reporting Statistics and Risk are available here. Further advice is available from Editorial Policy and from Robert Cuffe, Head of Statistics for BBC News.
