'Agitated' dog shot after jumping from third floor
A large "agitated" dog that had badly bitten someone was shot by police after it jumped from a third-floor window to escape.
Northamptonshire Police said it was called to an address in Farrier Court, High Street South, Rushden, at about 21:10 GMT on 2 January after reports a man had been "seriously injured" and another had sustained a "minor puncture wound".
A spokesperson said officers "found the large dog in an agitated state and when they attempted to sedate the animal, it jumped out of a third-floor window and ran off".
A police helicopter joined the search for the animal, which was found in Rushden's Hall Park.
The spokesperson added that "due to concerns for the wider public safety and the threat posed, sadly it was shot by armed response officers".
The Northamptonshire Telegraph reported the dog was a "Staffordshire-mix breed".
A 26-year-old man from Higham Ferrers was arrested on suspicion of being the owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.
He has been released while inquiries continue.
