Theatre and big TV screen set to open after delays

A new amphitheatre is set to open early in the new year after a series of delays.

Work at The Triangle, in Yeovil, was originally scheduled to be finished in the summer. The work features a 16ft (5m) wide LED screen and an outdoor seating area for about 100 people.

It is part of the Somerset Council's £24m Yeovil Refresh regeneration scheme.

Councillor Mike Rigby, lead member for economic development at the council, said: "We are incredibly excited to be opening the Triangle in the new year - a completely different space from the former Bandstand area."

The council plans to host a "diverse programme of events and activities" at the amphitheatre, which is based at eastern end of the town centre.

Mr Rigby added: "We very much hope locals and visitors alike will find it an inspiring, relaxing and exciting new addition in making Yeovil a thriving place to live, work and visit."

Work on the area's water feature will be commissioned in the spring, a council spokesperson added.

The project is part of Yeovil Refresh, which also includes new walking and cycling routes, and improved public transport links to Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction railway stations.

Work on The Triangle was delayed for several months due to delays in the material supply chain and finding difficult ground conditions once the project was underway.

About £4.7m of a government grant was allocated towards the Yeovil Refresh public realm improvements, with the remaining £4.9m being set aside to bring forward new developments within the town centre.
